Wednesday, August 31, 2005James Taranto (OpinionJournal.com) points out this interesting editorial in ... Arab News! They call themselves "The Middle East's Leading English Language Daily" and Steve Darnell writes,It is time to put an end to the "Cindy Sheehan debacle" in Crawford, Texas. Since I am not one to sugarcoat a subject I will start by simply saying: Ms. Sheehan is a liberal nut case who needs to be put in her place. ...Well said, especially in the Arab News. And just like the estimable Sowell, Kenyan economics expert James Shikwati should be heeded. He says huge foriegn aid pouring into Africa is hurting, not helping. Why?Huge bureaucracies are financed (with the aid money), corruption and complacency are promoted, Africans are taught to be beggars and not to be independent. In addition, development aid weakens the local markets everywhere and dampens the spirit of entrepreneurship that we so desperately need. As absurd as it may sound: Development aid is one of the reasons for Africa's problems. If the West were to cancel these payments, normal Africans wouldn't even notice. Only the functionaries would be hard hit. Which is why they maintain that the world would stop turning without this development aid. That says it pretty succinctly. Will anyone listen? Don't bet on it. Who could withstand the withering accusations of 'heartlessness' and 'greed' that would follow? [Permalink] (0) comments Friday, August 05, 2005This is easily the stupidest thing I've ever seen.Seriously, this is totally stupid. It also has the added benefit of being gutless, cowardly, and ridiculous. The NCAA is hitting the trifecta with one lousy press release! I thought this was an Onion article when I first saw it. [Permalink] (0) comments Thursday, August 04, 2005It's surprising that the Star Tribune would carry an article such as this - a defense of our use of the bombs that ended WWII - but they did. It was a reminder to me that Japanese brought war to us, we enforced peace on them.[Permalink] (0) comments
