My aunt sent me this. It's a letter from father's father to his father (i.e. a letter from my grandfather to my great-grandfather) and I just thought it was beautifully written and had a wonderful senitment.

Dear Dad,

I congratulate you on your birthday and may you see many more. I wish that we could be with you on Saturday and that we could give you a gift commensurate with our love for you but thats impossible now and such a gift will always be though we gave you the worlds finery.

One of the prime objects in my life is to put myself in a position to give you and mother the things you are now denying yourselves so as to be able to give to me, security from worry, comforts and luxuries.

Yet weve all been wonderfully blessed (perhaps you havent in an extravagant son) and during times which were unbearably hard on some people weve eaten well and had good places to sleep. Theres no reason in this world why the future should not be the brightest and most profitable time of our lives. The rules for a successful life can be very simple; application and ambition, keeping ever in mind the precept of Christ, Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I only hope that I can mould my life in such a fashion that will be a credit to you and mother. You have certainly given me a good foundation and if I fail the fault lies entirely with me.

Dad, I wish you would work it out so you could pass either the Arkansas or Missouri bar exam so that if you ever quit banking we can practice together.

Harryette and I are fine. As Ive written we made the trip O.K. Mrs. M. went home today....

H. and I send our love to you and mother.

Write often.

Your Loving Son,

Kaneaster
